Raba Kistner Infrastructure Awarded Utah Best of StateRABA KISTNER INFRASTRUCTURE EARNS “BEST IN UTAH” HONORS FOR SECOND YEAR, RANKED IN TOP 200 BY ENGINEERING NEWS RECORD (5/30/12) Salt Lake City: For the second time in as many years, Raba Kistner Infrastructure (RKI) has received accolades as the “Best in Utah” Civil Engineering firm. Additionally, for 2012 they are also being honored with “Best Analytical Lab.” Raba Kistner got this news the same week they were notified that they were in ENR’s “Top 500” for the eighteenth time.

Gary W. Raba, D Eng, PE, President/COO Raba Kistner Infrastructure

“We believe that the development and use of new technologies, hiring top Utah talent and working closely with the research community, is what keeps us at the top of the rankings – such asthe “Best of Utah” awards program and ENR’s top 500 firms ranking – but more importantly, top of mind when project developers want a project that will be planned and executed in the best way for their clients,” said Dr. Gary Raba, PE, who is President and COO of Raba Kistner Infrastructure. “Raba Kistner stepped into ENR’s Top 200 for the first time this year, after 17 years of being on the “Top 500” list, ranked 198th this year up from 220 in 2011, maintaining consistent growth in an industry that has been struggling in tough economic times. RKI’s year over year revenue growth of 34 percent reflects the firm’s ability to meet client needs and position the firm as the preferred provider of engineering services to construction projects.”

Clark D. Prothero, PE, named Vice President of Raba Kistner Infrastructure

Clark D. Prothero, PE, Vice President of Raba Kistner Infrastructure

The Utah office has grown to become the market leader in the region with over 110 employees – this represents the largest firm of its kind inUtah. The firm’s leaders are quick to attribute much of their success in Utah to the availability of a high quality Utah work force. “The RKI Utah team consists of locally hired and trained engineers, technicians and professionals that have consistently demonstrated an ability to adapt, learn and perform at a very high level,” said Clark D. Prothero, PE, Vice President of RKI and Manager of the Utah operation for the company.

“The firm has also achieved this growth through the deployment of new and innovative technologies which has led to the award of several large design-build projects including the I-15 CORE project ($1.2 B) inUtah. The firm has developed an in-house, proprietary database software program entitled ‘Electronic Laboratory Verification and Inspection System’ (ELVIS). The ELVIS program manages and collects data in a way that provides superior quality while saving clients money, and represents a paradigm shift within the civil engineering industry,” said Prothero.

Other technologies used by RKI include:

1) Deployment of tablet technology for on-site inspection, allowing for direct entry of construction observation reports that creates a “real time” reporting environment.

2) The use of on-site electronic construction plans: The use of “real time” electronic plans that update continuously through the “cloud” eliminates the need for paper copies and reduces the likelihood of construction errors

For its laboratory testing work, RKI counts on the service of the largest certified technician staff (65) in the state ofUtah. According to Dr. Raba, “Raba Kistner Infrastructure has a state of the art, 24,000 square foot laboratory facility, located in Orem, Utah. Collectively, the RKI team holds over 180 materials testing certifications in the areas of soils, concrete, hot mix asphalt and aggregates. The RKI materials laboratory is one of only a handful in the country that is overseen by a Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor, trained and certified to deploy and audit a Quality Management System in compliance with the ISO 9001 Standard for Quality Management System Requirements. This commitment to quality is important to our clients.”

Over the past year, the Orem Lab has performed an exceptional amount of laboratory tests. With 24/7 operations and 365 day availability, Raba Kistner is able to provide 24 hour turn-around time on materials testing. To date, over 24,000 nuclear soil density tests, over 3,500 particle size distribution tests, over 18,000 concrete compressive strength tests and over 1,500 hot mix asphalt tests have been performed. In all, an astounding 50,763 laboratory tests have been performed and entered into RKI’s proprietary material testing database.

Raba Kistner Infrastructure Staff with Best of Utah AwardRaba Kistner Infrastructure maintains strong ties to the local research community in an effort to continually incorporate the newest civil engineering technologies into practice. “The Utah Team has worked with researchers at BYU to install specialized data recorders into new bridge decks inUtahCountyto monitor performance during their service time. These special devices give information regarding moisture, temperature and electrical conductivity that will assist in properly maintaining the bridges for years to come that was not possible before. The benefit to the client/project, and eventually to the whole industry is that the project owner can better plan for facility maintenance based on the real time information collected by the data sensors,” said Raba.

Raba Kistner Infrastructure, Inc. (RKI), a leader in Quality Management Programs, is heavily impacting how tomorrow’s transportation needs will be addressed. We specialize in providing unique approaches that successfully deliver roadway, rail and transit projects. RKI has industry-leading program managers, project delivery specialists, consultants and construction managers on staff. We have created a comprehensive menu of solutions in the development, engineering, financing and management of transportation facilities and our services are tailored to help each client achieve their mobility goals. RABA KISTNER CONSULTANTS LAUNCHES “TEAMING” WEBSITE FOR UPCOMING SA 2012 BOND EFFORT/ENCOURAGES OTHERS TO “TEAM SMART” (4/11/12)
San Antonio. Raba Kistner Consultants, a key player in the effort to educate the public about the upcoming Bond election on May 12, 2012 has launched a website – sabondresources.com – to promote both the upcoming bond program, plus their own “Team Smart” resources available to companies who are putting together teams for the projects that are being proposed for the bond.

The website includes valuable links for bond information, including: a link to the proposed projects to be build with the bonds; a link to the COSA Design Manual; a News & Updates link regarding the bond committee’s efforts; a link to the bond website; and a link to the regional certification offices for companies needing to file for disadvantaged certification. More will be added as the campaign progresses.

“Raba Kistner has been very involved in helping the City pass this bond effort,” said Robert Costigan, COO of Raba Kistner Consultants. We believe in the projects and what they will do for the City. The plan is a good balance between basic infrastructure improvements (streets, bridges, sidewalks, drainage), public safety needs, cultural arts facilities and parks, and improves areas all over the City. We hope everyone else gets behind it and votes on May 12th.”

The website also serves as a resource tool for anyone putting together a team to win a project after the bond hopefully passes. “We have posted key resumes on the site, our project history as it relates to the bond and other information about our geotechnical engineering and testing services. We believe that teaming with Raba Kistner is teaming smart for these projects,” said Costigan.

“Raba Kistner Consultants has worked with the City of San Antonio for 43 years and has done thousands – literally thousands – of projects in the San Antonio area, said Chris Schultz, PE, PMP and Senior Vice President of Raba Kistner Consultants. “We have been a key player in writing codes for construction and are currently working with the City on their pavement codes. We currently maintain a master service contract with CIMS for geotechnical engineering and materials testing. We are an experienced, trusted and proven partner with the City and should be considered a strong partner for any teams who are hoping to get work from the 2012 bond program. Our experience for the City includes most of the larger, more complex projects from the 2007 bond program. We felt like this website was a good way to let folks know we would be a good partner – a smart partnering – for their team.”

Key COSA staff members have publicly acknowledged the importance of understanding subsurface soil conditions and how they impact the long term performance and lifespan of pavement design for COSA projects. “We are the recognized leaders in this field in San Antonio,” said Schultz. “We are born-and-bred San Antonio company, with 173 local employees based in our local office to support these projects, with the largest lab in the region. Our senior staff consists of industry leaders and regional problem solvers with vast geotechnical experience. These things combined with our records of over 10,000 borings in Bexar County make us a strong choice for 2012 bond projects.”

This commitment means we will continue to develop in ways that will benefit our clients the most, well into the future. ”

Over those 43 years, Raba Kistner has cultivated a strong presence and reputation in Texas, which has allowed the company to expand its multi-disciplinary services into new markets in Texas, other states, and Mexico. Through its application of sound business practices and decision-making, Raba Kistner continues to realize steady growth despite the recently challenging economy. In the last 10 years, the company has doubled its number of employees (to almost 450) and almost doubled its billings.

“We are on track to grow that much again by 2018,” said William Raba. “To do that successfully, we need to ensure each technical service line has the right leadership, staff, and technical capabilities. Restructuring allows each service leader to focus on just one thing – making their company responsive to the client’s needs in a rapidly changing marketplace.”

Raba Kistner’s innovative approaches and experienced professionals have also been widely recognized within the profession. In 2011, Raba Kistner received the prestigious “Best of State” Award for Civil Engineering in the State of Utah, and the “2011 Engineer of the Year” Award from the San Antonio Associated General Contractors (AGC) for the 3rd year in a row. For the last 17 out of 22 years, the company has ranked as a “Top 500 Firm” by Engineering News-Record, and Raba Kistner has consistently ranked as one of the top firms for both Engineering and Environmental in the San Antonio Business Journal.

The company credits its successes and continued growth during tough economic times to its commitment to quality control and cost-effective solutions. This commitment is supported by proprietary project management systems that ensure that projects are not only planned, designed and constructed properly, but also operated and maintained efficiently.

With the announcement of the company’s restructure, Raba Kistner has also refreshed its look with an updated corporate logo and new logos for each subsidiary company. Its website (www.rkci.com) has also undergone a fresh look, making it more modern and user-friendly.
