The San Patricio County Rural Rail Transportation District retained Raba-Kistner
in 2006 to assist local communities and industries with rail transportation
issues. The area is home to many large industries that demand reliable
rail service as well as to the Port of Corpus Christi which plans significant
expansions and development of a major container facility. Along with the
local rail traffic, an increasing amount of additional rail traffic moves
through the area on the way between the central U.S. and the Mexican border.
The large amount of rail traffic traveling on a limited infrastructure
not only impacts local industry and development, but also creates public
safety, mobility, and quality of life issues for the local communities.
Other concerns include future connections to Mexico and whether the local
rail system can withstand hurricane storm events.
To address these issues and to plan for future growth, Raba-Kistner is
developing a county-wide rail plan to identify local and system rail problems
and recommend solutions. Raba-Kistner believes that the District can provide
enhanced service to existing industries and the Port, accommodate future
growth, and make the local communities safer.
