GBR at TRBRABA KISTNER CONSULTANT'S BEN REESE, PE, PRESENTS AT 92ND ANNUAL MEETING OF THE TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH BOARD (San Antonio)

At the recent Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting, Ben Reese, PE, of Raba Kistner Consultants was invited to prepare a presentation about the research he began with his M.S. thesis. This work was performed with Dr. W. Spencer Guthrie, Professor at Brigham Young University, and was funded through the Portland Cement Association Education Foundation Research Fellowship Program. This was the second time that Reese was asked by the TRB Committee on Cementitious Stabilization to present their work at this conference. 

The title of his presentation was “Development of Clegg Impact Value Thresholds for Minimizing Rutting of Cement-Treated Base Material under Early Trafficking.”

The purpose of their research focused on developing threshold values for the Clegg hammer to determine when cement- treated base is adequately cured for early trafficking. Since “rutted” cement-treated base cannot be easily repaired, most agencies specify a long, or conservative, curing time before allowing a project to proceed. Literature and previous research indicated that the Clegg hammer would be useful in this regard and that a Clegg impact value (CIV) could be determined that would adequately protect the pavement.

Reese and Guthrie validated the previous research with respect to the Clegg hammer and presented a formula for determining an appropriate CIV based on material properties. According to Reese, their findings are “practice ready,” meaning that their results are sufficiently developed for immediate application.
