Raba Kistner Infrastructure (RKI) announced that it is a member of the Connect 202 Partners joint venture team awarded the design-build-maintain project to deliver the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway project in Phoenix, Arizona. As member of the Connect 202 Partners joint venture team, Raba Kistner Infrastructure will provide Construction Quality Management Services (QMS) for the first-of-its-kind project for the Arizona DOT, combining design, build and maintenance services. The innovative approach of the team delivers this 22-mile project three years sooner and $122 million less expensively than traditional approaches.

The fixed $916 million contract for design and construction makes this the largest highway project in Arizona state history. According to Arizona Governor Doug Ducey from the Arizona DOT (ADOT) website, “This is another example of government working at the speed of business to save taxpayer money and improve the lives of Arizonans. Thanks to hard work and collaboration, the South Mountain Freeway will be completed under budget and faster than expected.” In December 2015, ADOT selected Connect 202 Partners as the “best value” developer of the three short-listed teams that had submitted proposals to design, build, and maintain the new South Mountain Freeway. In response to ADOT’s challenge to the teams to propose innovative concepts that would save time and money while adhering to all environmental commitments, Connect 202 Partners proposed innovative approaches to optimize the design of the freeway, to reduce the amount of right-of-way needed, and to improve efficiency by reducing the amount of earth needing to be hauled by trucks. “Clark Prothero, PE and Newel White, PE worked tirelessly to develop an efficient approach to providing the construction quality management services in support of the Connect 202 Partners team,” said Russel Lenz, PE, COO of Raba Kistner Infrastructure. “This project win is an example of RKI’s commitment to teamwork and dedication to providing exemplary service for our clients and partners,” continued Lenz.
